On 6 June 1958, in the presence of Viscount Nuffield and the Duke of Edinburgh, Nuffield College received its Royal Charter. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the event, Robert Taylor, who was a Student of Nuffield (1965-8) before he became a University lecturer and then a distinguished journalist and historian, has written this entirely personal commentary on the evolution of the College since its founding in 1937. He traces how the Fellows and Students of Nuffield lived and worked as they made their distinctive contribution to the extraordinary expansion of Social Studies in Britain over the last seventy years.
