Hardback school textbook, published in 1845 by Oliver & Boyd. This school textbook is a 13th edition Scottish publication and is illustrated with 42 woodcuts. It is ‘compiled from popular writers to which is added a copious list of the Latin and Greek primitives which enter into the composition of the English language’. This copy belonged to an Alexander MacPherson, who signed the front and rear inner boards. The author was the Headmaster of The Circus Place School in Edinburgh and a member of the Scottish Enlightenment. The boards are scuffed and worn, but the book is still perfectly readable and in good antique condition. Look out for Alexander MacPherson’s classmate’s comment on his behaviour!
